Penelope Oberhardt, LCSW

Welcome to my website! I am so happy you are here.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Specialist in Perinatal Mental Health and my passion is to help parents adjust with the enormous life changes that occur during pregnancy, postpartum and early childhood period. I am based in the Los Angeles area, working virtually and can provide sessions to anyone in California.

Perhaps you had a difficult pregnancy or traumatic delivery. Or, your experience of having a baby brings sadness, irritability, overstimulation, loneliness or depression. Sometimes you may experience anxiety or intrusive thoughts. Becoming a mother also comes with an incredible identity shift! You are not failing, you are not alone, you are doing your best.

If you are pregnant, preparing for the addition of a new baby, adjusting to life with a new baby, or experienced a loss of a pregnancy, or need help in navigating parenthood, please reach out. I work with many Dads as well. Significant life changes like these can cause an enormous amount of stress.

There is also a word for this phenomenon. It’s called Matrescence. Matrescence refers to the process of becoming a mother, encompassing the physical, emotional, and psychological changes that women go through during pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood. It’s a transformative period, much like adolescence, and is marked by significant identity shifts and hormonal changes. The term highlights how this phase is not only about caring for a newborn but also about the mother’s personal growth and adaptation to a new role in life.

This can all feel very isolating during this time. You do not have to be alone in this. My intention in our work together is to provide you with a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment so you can start on your healing path. My approach to therapy is collaborative with large doses of empathy, compassion, and empowerment. Relief will come and with support you can feel better.

“You birthed a baby, and you birthed yourself into a new phase of life. There is no more pronounced shift in body, mind, and spirit than becoming a mother.”
